Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery – Dhalwangu bark Paintings from Yirrkala
(In House Catalogue)
The Yolngu (literally 'the people') are indigenous language group who have lived in the area between Maningrida and Numbulwar on the North-East corner of the Top End of the Northern Territory- A huge area bordered by the Gulf of Capentaria and the African Sea. Europeans will find it easy to understand that indigerous Australia has always been a patchwork of dialects, cultures and nations; just like provincial Europe. The position of the Yolngu would be easy to compare to that of the Bretons.
