The Surrealists drew a map of the world in 1929 in which the size of each country was proportionate to its artistic achivements. The vast continents of Australia was shown as a tiny speck against the huge masses of Europe. America and even Polynesia. And yet Australia at that time was - as it remains - the homeland of the longest continuous artist tradition in the world: the art of the Aboriginal.
