Michael Timbin

Artist Statement

Otto Timbin (Iatmul), born in Palembei in 1967, is the
eldest son of renowned master carver Joseph Timbin.
Since the death of his father, he has become head of
the family of five master carvers. Otto carves a wide
range of traditional carvings, including dancing masks,
roof finials, lime containers, and elegant walking sticks.

Michael Timbin, Otto’s younger brother, was born in
1974. His work is recognized for its complexity and
originality of design. His sculpture is inspired often by
myth and sometimes by aspects of male initiation. His
work can be found in the collection of the Museum of
Anthropology at the University of British Columbia.
