Rebecca has just returned from a grueling tour of the Australian outback, where she visited Lloyd Kwilla, in preparation for his exhibition.’
‘It was an extraordinary trip: over 3,500 miles overland across outback Australia in barely a week. The landscape in the north-western corner of Western Australia is absolutely beautiful – range upon range of red, scrub-covered hills, that change constantly in the light. I visited the aboriginal communities at Boraloola and Ngukurr, and saw much exciting new work being done in the art-centres there. But my main destination was Fitzroy Crossing, to meet up with Lloyd Kwilla, and to collect the paintings that he has done for his exhibition (opens at 2a Conway Street on 7 June).
We visited some of the sacred ochre-pits where he gathers the different natural-pigments that he uses in his work. It was fascinating to discover the great differences in tone and colour that exist in different ochre deposits, even ones that are quite close to each other’
