The exhibition explores the use of magic, superstition and charms in the
everyday life of peoples from opposite sides of the world - the Pacific Islands
and the British Isles. Working mainly from collections in the British Museum
where she is Artist in Residence, Jewell’s art-works replicate the huge variety
and range of different charms. These images may themselves be looked on as
magical potents, for they symbolize objects that are owned or worshipped in
efforts to control those aspects of life in the material or spiritual world that
are uncontrollable.
