The Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of 'Get Ready', the first solo exhibition of paintings by Holly Frean. The Exhibition runs from 19 September - 11 October 2008.
‘Get Ready brings together a playful collection of painted glimpses into
artists' lives as I envisage them. I do this by reading between the lines of
existing paintings and visualising how the artist's working day progresses.
Through drawing and painting in this way, I attempt to assemble a statement
out of the historical and contemporary legacy I encounter - both in the real
world and the art world.
‘I draw inspiration from the real (Lucien Freud making a cup of coffee for his
model) and fanciful worlds (Chagall travelling over Paris on a magic carpet)
often combining the two. I borrow ideas from books and other photographic
sources, found images, my own snapshots and references from art history,
film and popular culture are among my starting points. What did Andy
Warhol eat for breakfast? Who washed Monet's brushes? Why does Hockney
wear odd socks?’
