The Rebecca Hossack Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the first show of work by Hepzibah Swinford to be shown at the Charlotte Street.
‘A self-taught painter, Hepzibah Swinford was born in 1956 in London, where she still lives. She grew up – in London, St Ives, and a rural Scottish house with beautiful rose gardens – surrounded by Oriental art and by the paintings of her mother – the artist Dora Holzhandler. Primarily a flower painter, Hepzibah brings to the genre an enchanting intimacy and a rare decorative vibrancy culminating in intimations of ultimate serenity, in some ways reminiscent of the great creations of American folk art and the Douanier Rousseau too. Her own artistic voice – marked by a sparkling refinement and inspired by her love of patterns and motifs on antique and modern fabric and porcelain – and also by the colours and shades of sixties psychedelia – is intuitively sophisticated and daringly original.’
