It was a night to remember - an assembly of work from some of the finest indigenous artists from Australia opened by one of its best-loved colonial daughters.
With three floors of the striking gallery in Conway Street (itself an Australian work of art) alive with works by aboriginal luminaries like Genevieve Kemarr Loy, the Rebecca Hossack Gallery was indeed 'Utopia' for a night, in keeping with the title of the latest stunning exhibition. The work in this exhibition is unique, the cliche of the Aboriginal 'dot' paradigm totally reinterpreted. The canvases are large and painstaking crafted in miniscule strokes that reference depth and unity, the defining features of the communities and artists from which they hail. Exhibition continues until 31 July 2009.
