Alick Tipoti wins the 2008 Silkcut Award – 10 September 2008
We are very pleased to announce that on the 5th of September Alick Tipoti was awarded the 2008 Silkcut Award for linocut prints in Australia. Alick Tipoti won with his stunning work 'Apu Kaz' which was created especially for the award. Apu Kaz means mother and baby Dugong. His work has recently been aquired by the Museum of Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Australia, Queensland Art Gallery, National Gallery of Victoria and Australian Museum. The Australian Museum had not aquired any contemporary works in decades, so that they should select Tipoti's work is a big accomplishment!
The silkcut award for linocut prints was established in 1995 and is one of the most important print making awards in Australia, representing one of the broadest examples of technically refined and conceptually engaged printmaking. The name silkcut reflects the versatile and effortless handling quality of the natural linoleum product.
Alick Tipoti specialises in linocut print making, his highly detailed work reflects his Torres Strait Island Heritage, grasping his inspiration from his coastal life, constellations, family and the myths and legends belonging to the Torres Strait.
We are very excited to have the priviledge of showing such and up and coming artist in our gallery in an exhibition beginning on the 19th of September, we hope that you will join us.
