> Jamie Boyd - Tales: New illustrative Works: 22 February – 10 March 2012 AT Charlotte Street, London
"All we can do is to write on the old themes in the old styles, but try to do a little better than those who went before us." (Thomas Hardy)
Jamie Boyd and Robert Ilson, with regards to the show, write:
Some of our themes are old indeed: Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Little Red Riding Hood...
We treat them in the old styles : in Verse that rhymes and scans.
But we try to do a little better than those who have treated themes before us.
The characters in our Tales live in our century. They have histories that we can understand.
They must cope not only with animals, rulers and Gods but with our contemporary Media.
Furthermore, they can, thanks to our Illustrations, be seen as well as heard.
Truly we stand on strong shoulders.
We have learnt from and kept faith with the tale tellers of old and the writers and artists who have succeeded them.
But, following in their footsteps, we have tried to walk a few paces further.
We invite you to sample our results and judge for yourselves.
