Karen Nicol
Artist Statement
My career has always been involved with the fashion industry creating embellishments with some of Europe's top fashion designers such as Clements Ribeiro, Chloe, Matthew Williamson, Chanel, John Rocha and Julian Macdonald. True to my background I am motivated by textiles related to the body and am creating a collection of pieces which can be either viewed as a flat piece of cloth or can be worn as a garment.
The pieces are a selection of 'skirts' and accessories inspired by the desire to create a surface out of thin air, drawing in space with an assortment of materials using mixed media textiles as a way of painting with texture. They are an exploration of lace, in its usual sense of 'twisting threads into definite patterns' and as its other dictionary definition of 'a dash of spirit'.
I am passionate about the 'qualities' of the materials that I find and mixing them into the unexpected...whether it is the shiny white hard surface of a starched dress shirt front sculptured into Grinling Gibbons inspired carvings or rich ragged satin roses trapped on a rough carpet tape. I am mixing my enthusiasm in finding beauty in found vintage remnants and my love of stitch.
