Karen Nicol
Artist Statement
Karen Nicol is a fashion and interiors embroidery and mixed media textile designer. She has been established in her London based design studio for over twenty five years
making textiles for clients in the world of fashion such as Givenchy and Matthew Williamson and her own label range for Anthropologie. Interior textiles have been used by many people from the King of Qatar to His Holiness the Pope.
She is currently Visiting Professor in Textiles at the Royal College Art.
For the past five years Karen’s work has embraced gallery art pieces, commissioned by Shell Oil to create an artwork to celebrate plankton and by St James’s Cancer Hospital in Leeds to do an embroidered triptych. This was followed by her first solo shows at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery and the Mantero gallery in Como, Italy where her work explored the mix of fashion and art. This year Karen was selected for the 2010 Jerwood Contemporary Makers exhibition.
In her upcoming show ‘ Conversation Pieces’ at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery Karen looks once more at art influenced by fashion turning convention on its head to conjure up animals in couture skins.
