Iain Nutting
Artist Statement
Iain trained at St. Martin’s School of Art, London and was assistant to Anthony Gormley, Turner Prize winner. Although he has a fine understanding of all the traditional sculptural techniques, his preference has always been for constructed metal sculpture, which uses the industrial welding process.
Iain draws inspiration from the natural world preferring when possible to work from life. He cuts and welds recycled metal into sculptures, which capture the very essence of his subject
Nutting's work, although not simple to cast in bronze, translates extremely well into that medium and his first two bronze editions, Squirrel Monkey and Otter, will be exhibited in this show. Also on show are his stunning ne life-size Horse and Oryx, together with splendid smaller animal sculptures.
Ian nutting is the most exciting young sculptor that this gallery has promoted since the early days of Sophie Ryder. We are at present discussing a very large commissioned piece for one of Britain's foremost sculpture establishments and this would be another major step forward in the career of a man who has what it takes - a rare talent and, even more importantly, total commitment to his art. I share that commitment and have no doubt that you will hear a great deal more of Iain Nutting in the years ahead.
