>Utopia
Utopia sits astride
part of the traditional land of the Amnatyerre and Allyawarra people.
Utopia Station was bought back from a white landowner.
The Utopia people, instead of living in one township, have chosen to live
in small family groups within 12 to 20 camps. In doing so they believe
they have a stronger sense of community than otherwise, and are closer
to the cultural roots and "sites" that are important to them.
Utopia first gained artistic recognition for the batik work of the Utopia
Women in the mid 1970's. Batiks from the Utopia Women's Group are held
in almost every major public collection in Australia. The Group has been
a source of great pride to the Community, having been represented at numerous
national and international art and women's events.
