<>Haasts Bluff

Ayers rock and Irantji
Acrylic on Canvas, 2009
137 x 153 cm (54.8 x 61.2 ins)

Ikuntji, meaning 'a place where two creeks cross' is the local name for Haasts Bluff (NT). Fifty kilometres to the west of Hermannsburg and separated from Papunya by the spectacular Western MacDonnell Ranges, the community is made up of approximately 170 people, primarily Pintupi and Luritja speakers.

In the 1970s a number of artists living at Haasts Bluff and nearby Browns Bore painted for the Papunya Tula company, including Timmy Tjungarrayi Jugadai, Two Bob Tjungarrayi and Barney Raggatt Tjupurrula.

Anyone living in or around lkuntji is encouraged to paint. Collectively, Ikuntji paintings are recognisable through their bold colour and the inclusion of traditional motifs alongside figurative and naturalistic imagery. The key painters to have emerged are Narputta Nangala, Daisy Napaltjarri Jugadai and Alice Nampitjinpa. Individually these artists have developed their own sophisticated and innovative visual repertoire to record their Tjukurrpa (Dreamings) setting themselves apart by working intently with a strong sense of self expression.
